Coffee Talk

I heard recently that SLO has more coffee shops per capita than any other except Seattle. This got me thinking about one of my most favorite things in this world--a great cup of coffee! Those of you who've met with me know that among the first things I order anywhere is first cup of java for the day. I have to admit that no coffee has ever been able to rival the robust flavor of a fresh cup of Jamaica Blue, in Jamaica and made by Jamaicans. It goes down so smooth and has absolutely no after-taste. Even when I brought it home and made my own, it just wasn't as good.

However, SLO is a coffee town. While I don't expect my Jamaican experience to be repeated, I'm always on the lookout for a great cup of coffee. Currently, if someone were to ask me my local favorite I would have to say it's the Nutty Bean at the
Nautical Bean. All I can say is thanks Brett for whipping up such great brew! I find myself trying to come up with any excuse I can to make it by for a cup.

I'm curious what other cafe's you like. What coffee do you drink and what you would recommend?

Should I be ashamed of being the lover of corporate java giant Starbucks? I am. In terms of straight java, I'm not a fan. I'm more of a coffee-flavored-sugar-water kinda person. However I am a huge fan of almost all the Frappuccinos, but my most favorite is the Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino they sell during Christmas time. They do have a close second in the new Mint Mocha Chip Frappuccino, but it is second.

So, yes, Starbucks is my caffinated consumable of choice.

Ok, for starters, how can Starbucks even pretend to sell good "coffee"? Here's what I mean...

If I was to ask you who sells the most burgers in the world you would probably say McDonald's or Burger King, right? But would you say that they make the best burgers in the world? Absolutely not. In fact, because they are mass produced, there is no way for quality to be built in. The same argument holds true for Starbucks. Just because they sell the most coffee, doesn't make them the best.

For that matter, they sell more milk and sugar per pound than coffee! And what's worse, drinking a Starbucks "shake" could be worse than a Big Mac! Don't believe me? Find your favorite drink and assess the damage yourself.

Besides, I'm not sure I like spending money on companies that spend their money on things I disagree with. I'm not calling for a boycott... just for informed spending.

So, what is my beverage of choice? Diet Coke. About 60 ounces a day, to be exact. And from a fountain, not the can!

While we're at it, I even downloaded that Diet Coke commercial song. I can't tell you how happy it makes me. I think we should all just quit our jobs, rollerskate at the beach and drink Diet Coke... What a wonderful world that woudl be...

Thanks Phillip for pointing out the article on Starbucks. Our family used to love to go to Starbucks, but when we found out what they support this week we decided to stop giving them our business.

However, some other coffee shops we enjoy are Higher Grounds and The Coffee Bean.

The very best coffee comes from the metropolitan market in Tacoma Washington. It's roasted in small batches in the store and makes shopping a delight, as the fresh roasted aroma wafts through the rainsoaked air.

Second favorite is Seattle's best, and any comparison to Starbucks is impossible (even though they started in the same place).

Higher Groundz! World tour mocha, or turtle mocha...not good for you at all, but they're awesome!

I believe that the original question was "What coffee do you drink and what would you recommend?" The original question was not "Do you like Starbucks coffee, and if not, why not?" Nor was it "Please tell me your favorite soda and how much of it you drink in a given day." Certainly, you have the right to disagree with Brian, but that wasn't the question, so I think it would be more appropriate to make your case privately with him instead of in this public venue.

Personally, my absolute favorite coffee shop is Espresso Vivace Sidewalk Bar in Seattle. Great espresso! Can't be beat.

Sorry, Tim, if my comment was off-topic. Brian is a friend of mine, and I hope he wasn't offended. Even Brian himself agrees that what he drinks isn't coffee, but "coffee-flavored-sugar-water".

Anyways, I am not a big coffee drinker due to the... um... intestinal discomfort that nearly always follows. So maybe I'm just venting my abdominal distress in vain diatribes against Starbucks.

But I have found that I do enjoy the Nautical Bean's Chai. I think it is quite good.

Who knew coffee would be such a hot topic? Some recent blogs have elicited nothing but crickets, while coffee apparently strikes a chord! I have to admit, I shy away from the sweeter stuff because of the calories, but I do love the Nutty Bean. Thanks for the tips!

Phillip, it's OK. I understand. Although, I do have to agree with Tom that your comment was somewhat off topic. I think you misunderstood my comment about the coffee-flavored-sugar-water. What I meant was that I don't like straight black coffee. It's just not flavorful enough for me. This means that I add what most people would probably consider obscene amounts of sugar and creamer to any cup of coffee before I drink it--if I drink it at all.

For this reason, I never buy coffee at Starbucks. I always get a Frappachino of some sort. I suppose this could be considered coffee-flavored-sugar-water as well, but I digress.

Pastor Steve, you're definitely right, this topic did seem to spark a lot of discussion and feedback. That's a good thing. Hopefully things will start to pickup when school starts again.
